Christmas Eve Offerings
Our offering at both services on Christmas Eve will be given to the Beau Bear Foundation and designated to assist with the medical costs for Weston Werline. If you'd like to learn more about this remarkable child and family and the challenges they are facing, please read on!
If you would like to give through First Presbyterian Church in addition to the offering collected on Christmas Eve, we will be receiving funds until January 8. You may also donate individually following the instructions shared by Weston's family.
Meredith, Weston's mother, writes:
There is no gentle way to say it. He drowned. Our bright eyed, beautiful, sweet, sweet boy drowned -just two days after his second birthday. After two resuscitations, he survives with severe brain damage. This is our first public posting or request for assistance. We have spent the first 10 months loving on our precious Weston and his big sister, privately learning to walk in gratitude as we carry grief. We are broken for the abilities Weston has lost; but we still have full arms as we care for him, and a burning hope for his future. Weston is with us. Though he is unable to move purposefully or communicate – YET, Weston is very aware. Weston spent two months in a PICU while we lived in a Ronald McDonald house with his big sister and alternating grandparents. Weston was released to home on a ventilator and a g-tube, requiring skilled nursing care. Insurance only covers 15 of the 24 hour care we were told he needed. Being unable to get night nursing past the first couple of weeks we were utterly exhausted. We recently moved back home to live with parents while we try to sell our house in FL. We cling to the hope we have for a brighter future for Weston. He deserves every chance. He is working so hard in physical and occupational therapies. He has been able to take steps in a gate trainer. He has popped bubbles with his eyes on a gaze board. He has a grimace when frustrated. He has a pleasant resting demeanor. He is beautiful. Everything can move, just not when Weston wants it to. YET. We have researched and sought out treatments that have shown promise for other drowned children. But we have learned that because results cannot be guaranteed, insurance does not cover these therapies. It has been 10 and a half months. Weston is making some improvements. Most notably, Weston has begun weaning off the ventilator since moving to NC in August. With four hour breaks off the vent he was finally eligible to have Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. So, we loaded up like the Beverly Hillbillies and headed to New Orleans to Dr. Paul Harch’s center for eight weeks of treatment. We are almost done and need to plan for next steps. (Weston is now up to twelve continuous hours off the ventilator during the day. He is still on the ventilator overnight.) We have received so much prayer support through old-fashioned word of mouth from friends and churches. People keep asking what we need and how they might help. Until now we have not known how to answer. We have done what we could from personal savings and some help from family and special friends and have already spent over $30,000 on non-insured expenses. But now we are standing at the foot of a mountain of need. We can see it clearly. We need financial assistance to cover Weston’s upcoming scheduled intensive therapy opportunities and home equipment for continued hyperbaric oxygen therapy. |
