Group Leader: The Reverend Lloyd Griffith serves as the Parish Associate of First Presbyterian Church in New Bern, NC. He is a graduate of Duke University and Duke Divinity School and holds a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, he received a Certificate in Spiritual Formation at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. He is a teacher in the contemplative tradition and has facilitated numerous retreat groups, including several pilgrimages to Iona.
Lloyd writes: I appreciate your interest in this trip. This pilgrimage is a unique opportunity to visit fascinating places in our religious heritage. Jim Wallace and I have worked together to design destinations that have the potential to engage your head and heart in meaningful ways.
Our adventures will begin in London where we will spend a day touring the city’s historic and religious sites. Our first step off the beaten path is a visit to Canterbury and its beautiful Cathedral, one of the oldest pilgrimage places in England. We continue our seeking and seeing with a return to London for a unique tour of “thin, quiet places” in the bustle of this major city.
From London, our travels take us by train, bus, and ferry to the lovely, secluded island of Iona. We will follow in the footsteps of pilgrims who have gone before us and found this tiny island to be a sacred place where the membrane between the material world and the spiritual domain is thin. We will worship in the historic Iona Abbey with people from around the world, savor quiet, reflective times, read as you choose, hike the gentle trails around the island, and visit local galleries.
This trip is different from most vacations. It is an intentional journey to special places in hopes of seeing for ourselves what others have experienced in this sacred spot. Like them, becoming more conscious of God’s presence and action in our life and all life is profoundly empowering.
An invitation: I’ve had the pleasure of working with Rev. Lloyd Griffith and his groups twice before. We’ve toured in Scotland and Ireland, ending each time on Iona. Trips planned for the last couple years had to be cancelled due to covid. Thankfully we are able to travel once again. So for 2023 we have something new - a few days in London and Canterbury before our Iona time. We’ll visit tourist spots and sacred spaces in the city, then travel to the tranquility of this wonderful little island. I’m excited to be offering this pilgrimage. I hope you can share in the journey and be enriched by it.
Jim Wallace
